June 16

Catapults and Trebuchets

“Have fun storming the castle!” in this modern twist of our favorite medieval siege weapons.  We will examine the principles of the design, construction and operation of these ancient marvels.  We’ll test our design and construction against castle walls.  Campers get to take home a working model of a catapult.

 June 23

Arches and Bridges

What is the “key” to building an arch?  We will examine this and other civil engineering question in this fun camp about building things.  We’ll take a look at a self-supporting bridge designed by Leonardo and other exciting structures.

 June 30

Actions and Reactions

Shake up a flask in this fast moving exploration of chemistry.  We will mix up slime and other gooey concoctions.  Then we’ll test various chemicals for their true pH value.  We may even find time to move copper atoms through a solution and electroplate them to a 5-Cent Piece.  Campers get to take home a graduated cylinder and a pipette to add to their chemistry lab.

 July 7

Rocket Launch

If there is nothing more difficult than rocket science, then there is nothing more fun than building your own rocket and launching it.  We will examine the four forces that affect flight as we build our model rocket.  Although rocket missions are carefully planned, sometimes unexpected thing happen and like those who worked on the Apollo 13 mission, we will need to think critically and quickly.  Each camper gets to build and take home their own model rocket.

 July 14

Red Hot Robots

From their beginnings in science fiction to their work in today’s homes and businesses, robots make our world a little more interesting.  We will examine the principles of robot design.  We will examine and program various working robots.  We will set up a grand contest between battling robots.  Each camper will take home a model of a robot hand.

 July 21

Earth and Sky

Grab your shovel as we dig-in to Earth science! Earth’s layers are introduced with a spotlight on its outer rocky layer. Campers analyze and examine three rock samples to find out how they were made and where they were formed. They inspect minerals with an ultraviolet light to see which fluoresce. They use a model the moving tectonic plates that cause bends and breaks in the Earth’s rock layer.  We will build our own Sediment Stacker to take home.

 July 28

Newton's Pranks

Just what was it about that apple that set young Isaac Newton to thinking about gravity and motion?  Join us as we explore Newton's three laws of motion! We will yank a cloth from under dishes and send crash test dummies flying. We will adjust the mass of two identical cars and learn why heavier objects need a bigger push to move the same distance. Campers take home a Newton Spinner.

 August 4

Shipwrecked

We are on a ship sailing across the ocean when suddenly a storm comes along.  We hurry to a nearby island with a few meager rescued items before our ship sinks.  How will we survive?  What do we do first?  This imaginative scenario is played out against the impending explosion of a volcano on our island.  Campers get to take home their own hand crank flashlight to guide them on further adventures.

 August 11

Energy Burst

Jump into this energetic class that explores energy transfer and energy conversion! Campers jump and push up to reach their potential and use wind-up toys that swim, hop, and flip. We will spring into action with poppers, Boinks, and jumping bugs. Pulling back a car lets children control how far it goes. Campers get to take home a Mad Science Spring Thing to bounce around.

 August 18

Dry Ice Capades

This cool program provides campers the opportunity to probe the shifting states of matter through a series of engaging demonstrations.  Campers observe a change of state from solid to liquid right before their eyes.  Dry ice - the star of the show - under the guidance of the instructor, demonstrates the concept of sublimation.  And of course there is plenty of fog and bubbles!  A Thermocolor Cup will be a handy addition to future snack times!

Themes include:

 Fizz, Boom, Bang!

Shake up a flask of fun in the lab as a junior chemist!  This hands-on and interactive program of chemistry is packed solid with cool reactions.  Students put on goggles and change liquid to solid and back again.  They get to handle laboratory tools, build and break molecules, and pick up some tricks on chemical changes.

 *Ages 5 to 12

 Mission: Code

Join us in an online game that teaches programming by helping campers recognize the patterns and sequence structures involved in writing a line of code. Playing as a robot, your task is to get through each level, collecting stars or destroying rubies by creating a sequence starting with directional arrows, brackets and a hammer. As you advance, you'll have more obstacles in your way and get more tools to be able to make your way around more complex levels. You can even create your own level!

 *Ages 7 to 12

 Red Hot Robots

Join us for a week of fun with amazing robots! In this full week of half-days, learn about the uses of robots in our world and spend time experimenting with super cool red-hot robots. Experiment with sound sensing robots, line-tracking robots, amphibious robots and robots that can even play soccer! Discover the science of circuits and how robots use sensors to explore things around them. Use your skills to build your very own working robot to take home with you! The AM and PM portions will vary in experiments as well as robots built, so feel free to enroll in a full day!

 *Ages 5 to 12 **Requires a $30 materials fee**

 Eureka! The Inventors Camp

Overcome a series of challenges using basic materials, simple machines, tips from famous inventors and most important of all – your mind! Create catapults and forts, build shelters, bridges, and learn about density.  While Thomas Edison said “invention is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration,” this camp is 100% FUN!

 *Ages 5 to 12

 Secret Agent Lab

Calling all Agents, calling all Agents!  Get into gear with Agent Undercover and learn what it takes to be successful in the spy world.  Create, collect and analyze evidence and discover what skills are necessary as a crime scene lab technician.  Use your powers of observation to solve a crime and then design and build your own security system.  This fast paced program of forensics will have you connecting the dots and testing the limits of yours skills of observation.

 *Ages 5 to 12

 ...and more!

We're happy to customize a camp to fit your organization's needs. We also bring fun Flash Camps and other programs to existing camps.
